Jim's Training Session - Update

Richard and Jim have decided to cancel Saturday’s training session in Cottingham (9th February). The weather is not going to get any better.

If it’s alright on the 16th we’ll go ahead on the Cottingham circuit, and have the next on Cottingham also (23rd), leaving us with only two on Brantingham (that is the smallest of the circuits) and then three on Sproatley.

All updates will be posted on the website before the sessions, so keep you checking to avoid disappointment!

A note from Les and Elaine

"First of all a really big thank you from Elaine and myself to everyone who attended the dinner!  We had a great evening and we hope you did too.  Good food, entertaining speakers followed by a great band!
 
Thanks in particular to those who managed to sell tickets by the table, John Ullyatt, Mark Robinson, Chuck and Sue Evans and to Mark for his great speech proposing the prize winners, with his top ten tips for success!  Thanks also to Mark Ollerenshaw for replying on behalf of the prize winners.  I'm sure all will agree that Graham Stuart MP was an excellent guest and speaker and thanks go to him for stepping in at such short notice!
 
We are willing to organise a dinner next year, if that is what is wanted by club members - but we need to have some feedback. 
 
The Country Park Inn at Hessle would be our preferred venue because of its location.  We also have a good working relationship with the management there now.  It makes it so much easier as they handle all the arrangements - the only thing we have to do is make sure we get enough people to attend!  So, please let us know your thoughts.
 

Training Advice & VO2 Max Testing - For FREE

Angela Hillman is a PhD student at the Hull Uni studying the area of Exercise Physiology. She is conducting her dissertation research on the effects of hydration status on oxidative stress in cycling exercise. Angela is looking to recruit her final 2 male subjects (under the age of 45) for her first study. Angela is looking for recreationally trained as well as competitive/racing cyclists and has contacted our club for volunteers (and is thankful to those who have already participated!). Testing will be conducted during two time slots: 10am-1pm or 4:30pm-7:30pm (can be a bit later).
Subjects will benefit from the testing by finding out their lactate threshold, which is a more reliable measurement to prescribe endurance exercise training than the VO2max (and would cost upwards of £150 to have tested in a professional lab!), as well as their antioxidant status, hydration status & their body's reaction to exercising in the heat. Angela hopes to find that hydration status does have an effect on oxidative stress and thus be able to help athletes of all kinds attenuate that oxidative stress by assessing their hydration status and making individualized hydration plans. The research is mildly time consuming & intensive (90mins per trial), but Angela believes the benefits outweigh the costs & hopes you will participate.

Big G Sportive

The BigG Sportive organised by Hull Thursday Road Club and was a huge success, the organisation of the event was fantastic and a credit to everyone who helped make the event happen. The event could not have been on a better day the weather was superb, perfect for a day in the sdddle.

We currently have over 400 Photos of riders on the course and hopefully we should have some of at the start / finish online soon.
