Result from 13.5 Mile TT held on Tuesday 11th May 2004
Wright Cup - Etton Circuit

Sponsored by Star Bikes

Fifth in the Series Proves a Cracker

It seemed early on that Chris Whitelam was going to dominate the series but now it seems he has a serious challenger. Paul Purdy has thrown down the gauntlet and they both finished up after three laps of the Etton circuit with exactly the same times.

The revised starting point, which is much safer than the one along the main straight, fooled a few of the riders and there were a number of difficulties for Big G at the finish. An example is Andy Penny who was down as number 10 on the start sheets, turns up with number 5 on his back but is too late for that so goes off number 6. Spare a thought for Big G who has to take times with an average of three riders a minute (sometimes four in 5 seconds). You did a grand job G. Safety might be improved even more if cars would park on the road just after the finish and away from the course.

Matty Barratt adds to the schoolboys in the competition and did a great entry time of 27.34 for the two laps. He was in a hurry as he was playing in a school concert at eight o'clock. Dawn Sharpe was another new starter this year, resplendant in her colourful top. But Dawn was no match for Val Brabiner who caught her half way around the first lap. There was so many starting as planned that Mark Walker and Joanne Morrow (Nos. 3 and 6 respectively) who were late for their own positions had to wait right until the end before they could get a ride - and it was cold for them hanging about.

Mick Adams certainly shows a class beyond his years, his 36.36 gave the other vets something to think about. I believe he's a supervet now (advice from my fellow geriatrics which may not be true). Tim White recorded a respectable time of 35.05 but this was to prove to be outside the top 10. Derek Palmer forced his way round to a 33.51 for 8th place (I'd have loved to see him ploughing up the hill) and then Mark Carmichael beat him by one second. Andy Barnes, still improving recorded 34.32 for 10th place but Steve Macklin came back with 32.24 - the leader on the board at this point. Neil Cleminshaw, not yet moving to his usual performance (but you could well hear his disk wheel) came back with 33.05. Richard Moore then topped the leader board with 32.12 but this was short-lived when Paul Purdy returned 31.15. We all held baited breath to see what Chris Whitelam was going to do - starting just three minutes behind Paul, Chris finished exactly three minutes to the second after him; a dead heat. Look forward to the return match.

Among all this young Ryan MacLachlan recorded the 5th fastest time, 32.59, and Joanne and young Mark, who had had to start at the end of the field, came in with their two lap times. Mark had improved (he's a very keen lad) but was beaten by a keener Matty Barratt. Joanne expectedly beat Val and I think Dawn went round for enjoyment - well people do these kind of things for pleasure.

Someone left a Red and Black Windproof Top at the event and is now in the safekeeping of Barry Trotter - give him a call if it's yours. Pictures
