Ten League Event Five

Disappointing Weather Conditions for the Last of the Ten League events this year.

An awful lot of rain fell in East Yorkshire on Thursday 15th July and it happens that this was the also the deciding day to the Ten League Competition. Although the rain did cease ten minutes before the timekeeper set the first riders off, the course was quite waterlogged and there were quite a few who turned up and decided not to ride. In fact only 24 started - and two of these didn't make it to the finish.

In the premier division the battle between the two fast men - Joel Wainman and Julian Gromett - continued and a 12 second gap separated the two this week. Another victory for Julian, but it's got to be said that Joel was a little under the weather (sic) after collapsing the previous Sunday after finishing third in the YCF 100 mile time.

A much closer battle in Division One where Lee Watson had the edge over Jeremy Ireland and Ryan MacLachlan by a mere six seconds. Jeremy and Ryan tied for second place.

In Division Two Steven Guymer showed some of the form he had last year and did his best time this year - the only rider to beathis personal in this event. Steven has had some agonising dental problems this year and actually rode two fo the events after having tooth extractions.

Another tie occurred at the top of division three as both Paul Hayward and Mike Williams recorded exactly the same time. Only two starters in the last division where Gary Brearley made sure of winning this division. Brian Whitfield recorded another thirty minute ten which is a really good time when you consider that he - I won't tell you his exact age - is well past the three quarter century. Spare a thought for Brian Garfitt also, he's not in the best of health, he's also well in his seventies and he was going to make this his last event but the weather decided against it. Brian's been supporting these events for I don't know how long - an age in fact.

Winners in each of the divisions are decided on average speeds over the fastest thirty miles (three events). Fastest of all naturally comes from the Premier Division and was Joel Wainman. His 27.7 mph was perhaps a couple of miles per hour slower than he used to record on the V718 in earlier years, but the main thing is that he's still the fastest.

Ryan MacLachlan was a worthy winner in Division One especially as Ryan started in Division Four and worked his way upwards recording his best ever time in event two. He's not quite got the hang of his Low Pro bike yet. A third of a tenth of a mph separated Jez Ireland and Lee Watson - the series ended just when Lee was getting the better of the other two.

Another close margin in Division Two where Alan Gay beat Steven Guymer. Almost certainly Steven could have done better, but then he might have stayed in a higher division. Young Calum did well to finish third - it's unfortunate getting promoted for the last event but he'd secured enough points in the overall competition.

Mike Williams had more than half a mile per hour average over second placed David Brearley. And Mike is more than three times the age of stylish David and I wouldn't bet on Mike beating him next year.

David's dad Gary comfortably won Division Four's speed averages from Mike Kilgour - quite a few ups and downs in this division over the series.

Overall on points Calum McElwee came out on top; from enthusiasm or ability? I'll let you take your pick. There's not many youngsters coming into the sport these days and those in this event - Calum, Ryan MacLachlan, David Brearley, John Brearley (who had a bad accident to his knee just after the first event) and Steven Guymer have all made good accounts of themselves.

A few more pics.
