Sloop Cup - Newbald 18th July

It was business as usual for Chris Whitelam when for the 8th time this year he powered to victory with a 25 seconds a winning margin over Dean Fulstow. Strangely Dean was complaining of been tired and off colour at the start but put in his best result in the series– typical cyclist). Steve Maklin turned the tables on out archrival Andy Barnes to claim 3rd spot. In 5th place was Nathan Wilson who showed what he is capable of when he takes these things seriously and puts the 100 % effort in.

The youngsters Vince, Calum and Mark, who were each separated by about 15 seconds, took the next 3 places. This course obviously suits their lightweight builds as they put the rest of the field behind them. You must of course remember that they have a significant weight advantage, unlike some of us who have to carry the results of too much beer, good food and fine living around our midriffs (that’s my excuse anyway). For next season I propose a weight handicapping system (similar to horse racing), which should help to even things up a bit. Mark put in without doubt his best performance in the series I have ever witnessed and is getting stronger with each event and is starting to get very close to the others.

Completing the 10 ten were myself and Neil who were seeing the benefits from our recent training camp at high altitude on the North Yorkshire Moors.

This has honed our finely tuned athletic physiques and given another 4 months my fitness should just about be peaking. Joking aside Neil’s performance justifies some merit as he’s only just started riding again

It was the best night of the year so far for racing, with hot conditions and a slight easterly wind. This made it very fast to Newbald but resulted in a long hard slog up South Newbald hill. I think times are generally faster when the wind blows from the west.

The overall situation is starting to take shape now as riders approach the maximum 10 scores and then start dropping scores, which will see the stronger riders who have ridden less events start to rise to the top.

Finally a bit of a moan and I would repeat my request from earlier in the year for riders to get to the start no later than 6.45pm. Once again several riders turned up last minute resulting in the start sheet been disrupted and leaving me with less than 15 minutes to warm up. I realize that people have work commitments etc but if you are in that situation a late start can be requested – moan over.

The next event is the 2 up10 on the Driffield to Beverley course. The meeting point and start starts is at the Beswick lay-by (just before Beswick school on the main A164) and heads back through Leconfield to the roundabout at the end of the Beverley (northern) by-pass and returns to finish near the start. Teams entered so far are listed below. Please let me know if you wish to ride and are not listed and please get yourselves to the start in good time!
