Last Event Little Weighton 10th August, 2006

A heavy rainfall preceded the last of the road race league events, it didn’t help the state of the roads yet 37 riders signed on. The wet roads unfortunately meant that many wouldn’t reach the finish because of punctures, if not in their tyres then in their legs.

Group one started at 7 o’clock with John Brearley, Lee Watson, Steve Savage, Dave Hudson, Mark Walker, John Hakner, Derek Palmer, Andrew Johnston, Phil Eden, Phil Bixby, Stewart Abel and Andrew Bates as its members..

Group two started four minutes later and comprised Michael Chorlton, Mark Ollerenshaw, Matthew Fenton, Steve Macklin, Mel Blackford, Paul Musgrave, John Hopper, Danny McClusky and Mike Gill.

With only three riders in group three, who were Dave Compston, Nathan Wilson and Steve Marrows, they were allowed to go after only a minute more had elapsed.

But four minutes more went by before the scratch group departed. They were Alistair Kay, Steve Ward, Mark Wordsworth, Chris Daddy, Peter Williams, Kit Gilham, Richard Moore, Stew Axcel, James Sampson, Dave Shackleton, Mike Moss, Chris Ghiorse and Pete Hinchliffe.

Lap one saw group one stretched a little on the climb in the rain – it’s not very pleasant sitting close to wheels and they were still finding their feet. Expecting a lap time of around 20 minutes, John Brearley crossed the line first in 19:20. Having taken a minute back from the leading group, group two arrived and Steve Marrows had driven him and Nathan Wilson from group three across from the minute’s handicap they had from it. Dave Compston unfortunately didn’t make it at this point having been more concerned with a horse that had bolted. Even worse, Steve and Nathan’s chances exploded with their tyres.

The scratch group set about their task in earnest and with complete regularity, four laps not far from seventeen minutes around the circuit each. Ali Kay, leading on points said he put in a couple of turns but it was mostly the others who had most to gain. Ali’s threats were only from this group with Mark Wordsworth, Steve Ward and Chris Daddy breathing down his neck whilst Steve Guymer who might have been ahead was away in Holland.

The lap two prime was taken by John Brearley but it was on lap three that the talent from this group began to show. Steve Savage from Clifton who is a road novice (so I’m told) had had enough of the skirmishing and earned himself a lead of nearly half a minute to take the lap three prime. By the finish he’d extended this to a minute and fully deserved the applause as he crossed the line. From then on the field was nicely spread making it one of the easier races to obtain a result. Although Andy Johnson won the sprint for second place, this was after he’d taken a lap out because of a puncture.

Most attended the prize presentation held at the Black Horse in Little Weighton. Once again Mr and Mrs Baskerville presented the Road Race trophy to winner Ali Kay who graciously thanked everyone who had helped to run the series. Mr Baskerville had also handsomely contributed to the prize list. Shirley Sutton presented the Veteran’s trophy to Michael Chorlton and Betty Philipson the Under 23 Trophy to Steve Guymer, received by his dad Richard in his absence. Malcolm Daddy was praised for the organisation and he presented Shirley with a bouquet of flowers and Jim Sampson with a ‘Discovery’ road vest for their help. Shirley Sutton also collected £37:40 for the Dave Raynor fund to which she is adding another £100 – she does this because hubby Vic Sutton always believed that the best way to help riders develop is the way of the Dave Raynor fund to help riders race abroad.
