Huddersfield Star Wheelers Road Race 29/06/08

Hull Thursday RC rider Mark Ollerenshaw represented the club at the Huddersfield Star Wheelers Annual Road Race on Sunday 29th June on a tough, hilly circuit near Holmfirth. The 6 lap, 35 mile Regional B race was run off under cloudy skies and strong winds. Thankfully, the rain held off as the circuit had a number of tricky corners and the road surface was poor in places.

The race, as usual in a 3/4 cat races was fast for the first couple of laps with riders attempting to breakaway, only to be reeled back in after a few miles. As the laps ticked by the field was reduced and the pace eased slightly as the 2 major climbs took their toll. This course is a hard one as there aren’t any flat sections to speak of, the climbs are tough and the descents are tricky and technical.

A group went clear for a lap but, as with previous attempts, were pulled back and what was left of the field was all together for the final lap. Nobody wanted to commit themselves too early and it all came down to a sprint finish up the hill to the finish.  A crash in the bunch hindered Mark in the sprint and he crossed the line in 11th place, a single place outside the points.
