Another excellent coached set of early season training events courtesy of our own ABCC Coach Jim Sampson.
Whatever the weather - Local Cyclists Could once again depend on Jim for providing first class training sessions that are well organised and provide valuable feedback to the riders. As the 2007 season gets underway, several riders have once again kick-started or honed their training with these valuable sessions.
Jim achieves these by organising the events, keeping everyone informed, obtaining marshals and helpers, ensuring the groups have a reasonable number of 'matched riders' each week. In addition to all this the events have multiple groups - all splits are timed and photographed - then excellent reports appear on this website the following week.
This year Jim overcame many obstacles along the way, including switching the Sproatley and Brantingham sessions to avoid the road-works near Brantingham. Unfortunately one session at Sproatley was canceled due to poor weather - a decision made by Jim in the interests of rider safety, again the last event at Brantingham was clipped short following a torrential down-poor - which was another sensible move.
On behalf of all the riders who have attended the 2007 early season training rides - I'd like to offer this big Thank-You to Jim and all of his many helpers for ensuring we are in shape of the coming season.

Bob Hudson Trophy TT - Warter - 9th September

Next year the club may be organising a circuit race in East Park........
and a criterium in Hull City Centre. This has not been finalised. The proposal came about as a result of an approach by Hull City Council who have asked the club to orgainse the events. If these events are to go ahead we will need a team to organise them, and we need that commitment before the events are taken on. Are there any members willing to take on the role of 'chief organiser'? It is a big task, but if the events are to be arranged it will need someone to pull them together. It is anticipated that a Hull City Council representative will attend our next Committee Meeting on the 15th September. If you are interested it would be worth attending that meeting. Any volunteers please contact Andy Barnes the Club Secretary.

Andy Barnes TT Year
Andy Barnes has ridden 15 Open TTs this season with a varying amount of success. His best result was a second in the Scunthorpe RC Open 25 on the undulating C25/19 Course. Of the 15 starts Andy had 9 top 10 finishes. He had PBs at 10 miles (21 07) and 25 miles (55 03). These where achieved on the same weekend when he travelled down to Andover to take part in the Police National Championships. One of the personal highlights for Andy was representing the club in the National TTT with Chris Whitelam and Steve Macklin. All being well, Andy hopes to get a good winter in and then see what the 2007 season brings.

TT will be held on Saturday, 2nd September. Start time is 2.00pm. Last signing on is 1.45pm

Steve Guymer Racing Update
In a the Crawley two day a round of the National Series he won the King of the Mountains Competition. By Gaining 30 points out of 30 on the 1st road stage. This put him well clear of any challengers so when he got a few early points the next day he was out of reach and the jersey was his! In Holland and Belgium, he rode a 3 stage 2 day, 2 crits in Holland, aswell as 2 kermesses in Belgium. He is now planning on riding for a dutch team next year whilst he goes for 6 weeks over the summer.

Steve Macklin Racing Update.
As usual Steve is having another busy season. As well as the TT series and Road Race League he has had a Road Race just about every weekend. His latest event was a veterans race under LVRC rules. This was the Fleche Wallone in the Midlands. Steve got in a very early 3 man break and stayed away for the full 48 miles. In the chasing goup where experienced road men Brian Davison, Gary Hill and Andrew Donaldson. Steve contested the sprint and came second. Steve races in the 50 to 55 year age group.

New Club Run
From September there will be a club run leaving Skidby Mill at 0930 hours. The first couple might be a bit thin on the ground because racing is taking place, but hopefully they will be well supported. The ride will be on the first Sunday of every month. Depending on numbers and ability will depend on the distance and pace. It might be appropriate to have 2 or 3 groups with a meet for a cafe stop etc. I often get asked by potential members about club runs and the committee agreed that we should have an official one to see what interest develops. Most active members do a run on a Sunday but we all go from different spots. Please try and come to this one once a month. There will be a ride for everyone so come along - Andy Barnes

Lost looking for local open Time Trials?
This is a list of local Open Time Trials - they're not any harder than club events - Riding regularly obviously gets you fitter - and it gets your times down. These events do need supporting - there's always a good atmosphere at them - a little rivalry between other clubs but you must remember that you have to enter these events two weeks before the date of the event. Hull Thursday to promote 2006 National Championships

For 2006, the East Yorkshire Classic is to become the National Elite Road Race Championships and will be held in Beverley on Sunday 25th June. The previous day, the club is promoting the National Womens' Road Race Championships and an elite town centre Criterium is to be held in Beverley on Friday 23rd June. This event will be preceded by two running events promoted by Beverley Athletics Club.Martin Cockerill and Andy Cawley and their race team have been working for months on these three events. Support from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the Humberside police has been outstanding, with full road closures for all events.

Young Hull Thursday Rider Vince Cartwright
In February this year Vince was selected by British Cycling to enter the Talent Team Programme. Vince is now 15 years of age and will be 16 in July. He decided to join Hull Thursday shortly after his selection

Prior to his selection by British Cycling Vince had no experience of cycling and since then he has become a keen cyclist and is keen to compete in all disciplines of the sport. He is attending the track in Manchester on a Tuesday and Friday evening. His favourite event is the Madison. In spite of a couple of spills he is doing well and managing to finish half way down the field.

Vince recently won a Cycle Cross event at Winterton. He beat a good field, including Sam Robinson, who has had a number of good wins this season.

Vince is starting to train hard and is regularly attending the Tuesday and Thursday evening chain gangs which go from Willerby Square.

 

2005 AGM Report 
The AGM was held on 21 st November at Hull and East Riding Sports Club, Chanterlands Avenue .
20 members attended the meeting and some interesting debate took place. The most significant discussion revolved around the proposal to change Rule 7. This was carried and it now means that second claim members can be awarded club trophies. The exception being Club Championships, which are still only open to first claim members. Ron's Trip to America

Recently Ron Nozedar took a trip to visit his son in North Carolina, America. During his stay he rode the Carolina Sports Link Magazine 10 Mile Time Trial, held at the Lowe's Moter Speedway Circuit, Charlotte. Ron also managed to get the correct number of laps in this time! It was attended by 185 competitors. Ron's Son, Mark, did a 21.57, Finishing 15th. Ron managed a 29.26, finishing in 168th place. A big Well Done to both of them!

Hull Thursday's New Secretary

We're pleased to tell you that Andy Barnes has agreed to become the new Hull
Thursday Secretary. We have been without this official since early in the
year when Mark Best was unable to carry on because of work commitments. Andy
will make a very good secretary and hopefully you'll all give him your
support.

 

Rider of the Month

Once again Nathan Wilson deservedly has been elected as the rider of the
month. Nathan's had quite a good year and was quite a strong contender in
the road race league. He also didn't disgrace himself in the one day classic
where he competed against the best in the country in a very gruelling race.
Nathan is a very strong rider, improving all the time and he did a terrific
ride in the hill climb.
