For the first time in the whole of this year's
Ten League Competition, Joel Wainman was beaten, not by one but by two riders who tied for first
place in
the premier division. Steve Gore-Brown (Pete Read Racing) and Jon
Surtees (Knaresborough RT) tied for first place with a time of 20.03 (only
3 seconds
off the magic 30 mph target). Surely Joel would have been well inside
this barrier if he'd not got those fast 100 miles in his legs from last
week-end.
The competition is keen in this division and Neil Cleminshaw only
finished fourth in spite of taking another big slice off his personal best
recording
20.29.
The last event of the series presented itself
as milder and calmer that those that preceded it and many did their personals. Hull Thursday's
schoolgirl Clare Spencer recorded 24.19, well inside her best to
win her division. But age seems no barrier, Brian Whitfield won division
seven at
73 year old with an incredible 26.28 (Perhaps not as good as another
73 year old, Brian Haskell from Huddersfield who, competing in a higher
division,
recorded 23.08). Peter Smith, a novice a couple of years ago won
his division with a personal best 21.43. And so it goes on.
The competition isn't just about doing personals,
the prizes are given to those who consistently produce the highest speeds. Joel Wainman
(Pete Read)
easily won this with an average in excess of 29 and a half mph,
more than half a mile an hour faster than Steve Gore-Brown (Pete Read) who
just
managed to beat Hull Thursday's Neil Cleminshaw.
The overall winner, however, is based on points
earned within each division and augmented by improvements. So the most consistent is rewarded
and this has been a very narrowly fought competition and Tristan Batch of
T Rex took this on the eleventh hour by the closest of margins. Only one point
in it
as he scored 70 agains 69 accumulated by both Richard Bielby (Hull
Thursday) and Helen Procter (Bob Jackson RT) from Leeds. Richard was winning
this as he went into the last event but only managed to improve by 11 seconds whereas Helen has been a contender right from the beginning and
improved her personal best to a 23.30.
