Club Dinner
The club's Presentation Dinner took place at the Darley's Hotel on Friday 1st November, and although numbers were down slightly, it was definitely another good 'do'.
Mike
Pickering was our new master of ceremonies following on from Cindy
Cleminshaw. Neil and Cindy didn't expect to be there because of
the new addition to the family - nice to see them there. Mike was
a little nervous before the event but it didn't show - his heavy
breathing into the microphone was the antidote to his first night
nerves. And his stories went down well.
Our
guest, Tony Bell, needed little introduction, none at all for those
who read Cycling Weekly where his articles each week provoke much
correspondence. He says what he thinks and his audience seem either
to love him or to hate him. Our audience seemed to love him.
Tony is a journalist, a cyclist who doesn't get out as much as he'd like and who wished he were a bit fitter. His fame, he explained, is more for his journalism than for his cycling abilities. But he was a good cyclist and he did hold a professional licence for a short while ("in you hand?" questioned our MC).
I asked him if he'd raced in our area much and this was affirmed - he had a great respect for Mike Green as a bike rider and I had pleasure in informing him that Mike was Sheila's brother. Of course there were a few who'd raced with him: Mark Robinson, Roy Irwin, John Lockwood and Howard Peel, all there in the name of T Rex to support him. He rode in some of the schoolboy events in the Park that I organised. An even bigger surprise was that a very good friend of mine, Jack McAllister who lives in Birkenhead, is his ex father-in-law. I met Jack and Marjorie (also an elite lady cyclist in the fifties) in Majorca 15 years ago, had a few holidays there with him and on one occasion we met his daughter Ann, also a good cyclist. Ann is a lifelong schoolfriend of Sally Boardman and was also Tony Bell's wife. We've been across to ride with Jack and we still keep in touch. It's a small world!
The main purpose of the
dinner, of course, is to salute our prizewinners, and this was done
with mucho gusto.

Mike Boyle gave out some BCF awards to Barry Trotter and Malcolm Daddy - special organiser for Barry for work over the years and to Mally for organising the RR League.

First
on the floor for the dancing, as always, was Hughie Applegate and
so the music and the booze went on into the night.
The food was good, the company good, the speaker good; what more do you want? See you next year.
