Keith Carter Two Stage Road Race Sunday, 20th July 2003

 

Danny Connolly of Foxes Cycles clearly won the 50 mile road race in the second stage of the Keith Carter sponsored Road Race. He sprinted away at the end of the fifty mile stage to win by 12 seconds from a 26 rider strong group who had decided to ride around the course together protecting their times gleaned from the one lap (7 mile) time trial in the morning. He finished 7th overall.

A hot humid day produced few surprises for the 50 strong group which started around the Walkington course on Sunday, a lone break by Chris Hurd (VC Lincoln) just after the flag was dropped proved just to be that. Nobody joined him and he picked up the first two primes of the race. An unfortunate crash eliminated about a dozen riders on the first lap, a touching of wheels, no-one seriously hurt but Zak Thackray had to go to hospital with a deep gash above his eye.

 

Matt Miles (Team Marie Curie) made an attempt on lap 4 but it was another solo effort and he came back to the pack. Lap 5 saw something more productive when Danny Connolly and Mike Gill (Team Chevin) broke free. Danny had already taken lap 3 prime ahead of the bunch but they shared the next two primes and Danny just kept away at the finish.

 

Our best rider was Steve Macklin who seems to be in top form now and he finished 4th in the Time Trial, 14th in the road race and 4th overall. Mark Best finished 11th in the road race and 15th overal whilst Chris Burton finished 22nd in the road race and 19th overall. Our other riders didn't have such a lucky day. Rob Stones got pranged from behind; he didn't come off but his back wheel was so buckled he was riding against the brake blocks. Carl Looker snapped his chain at the start of the time trial and had to have a restart. Gary Sheriff dislocated his knee, fortunately by Dennis Hunter who expertly put it back into place. The rest of the Thursday riders, Nathan Chester, Andy Barnes, Andy Peers, Nathan Wilson and Gary Lamping, were shelled out during the course of the race.

 

The lap times were 18.41, 19.09, 17.58, 18.17, 17.56, 18.31, and 18.40.

Rather a negative race I thought although Les Barratt had done a great job in putting it on - I was particularly impressed with the finish area and the presentation, even though the 50 mph finish took some straightening out. To pep it up I think you need some generous time bonuses on the primes, say 10 secs, 6 secs and 3 secs each lap and double at the finish. Let me know what you think.
