Ten League Event Five

What a pity there are no more events. Just when it seemed that Julian Gromett had complete control of the series, Joel Wainman comes back with a 21.24 in the last event to turn the tables and beat him by 25 seconds. Another Ullrich type comeback? These two have dominated this division perhaps but the other riders have been quite consistent compared to other divisions.

Division One provided a superb battle between Charles Crookes and Dave Shackleton. Two wins each and a draw with Charles picking up the last one. I should tell you that Dave Shackleton got his first cat licence this week. Steve Guymer, the youngster winning every division up to now was now promoted to his right level of competition and consequently finished up in 5th position. Jeremy Ireland must have been a bit disappointed doing a 25 after his 23 last event.

Len Grayson, the Peter Pan of Yorkshire racing, had an excellent last event knocking another half minute off his Ten League Personal. Shame for John Lockwood who also pulled the stops out and went much better than he did in last week's road race league. I would have put my money on John Brearley this week, I knew he would do a 23, and so he did. Perhaps the best ride, however, was Vanessa Frith's; beating 24 minutes on this course gave her the 14th best time on the night against all the men.

Division Three provided no surprise. Despite doing his best time in the series, Tristan Batch could only play second to Alan Gay who luckily was demoted to this division after puncturing in event three. Everyone else in this division went back a bit.

Chris Garden, one of our new members enjoying the competition, won division four in a similar fashion to Joel Wainman. He'd been beaten by team-mate Chris Burton in all the previous events. Chris earned himself some very useful points in the series.

Gary Lamping won division Five improving by two minutes from his first event. Gary Brearley, in second place, improved by nearly three minutes but started from a longer time base. Mike Kilgour was promoted into this division and would have had a good chance of winning the championship on points. Unfortunately he went back on the night and finished in 5th place.

Division Six was won by Derek Milner who's supported these events for many years. He wasn't sure how it would go getting away from the V718 but he clearly won this division with some consistent time.

The averages for each division, the best three of the series, provides the prizes, but no surprises. Although Joel Wainman pulled a little back on Julian Gromett, Julian now has the record for the series on this course (naturally with it being the first time) of 27.907323 mph. Will someone beat 28 mph next year? Averages are shown below the division times.
