Julian Grometthas has now won four events in a row, Joel Wainman has edged a little closer but he's got to pull out all the stops to pull back those few seconds that separate them. Julian is the more consistent up to now but I've seen Joel pull off some astounding rides. Man, or should I say Boy, of the match must be young Steven Guymer. He's taken a probably unassailable lead in the points, and deservedly so. I thought he did a superb ride in the last event when conditions were not so good but he's gone one better by beating his personal by another 45 seconds. Don't forget that Steven is 14 years old, and has probably set up a ten league record. Can anyone tell me if anyone has been promoted in every event before?f
Thirty two riders beat their personal Ten League bests, but another 22 didn't. Sadly there are quite a number of non-starters, perhaps the rain clouds put them off but the wind had abated quite a lot since yesterday. A few of the slower riders made considerable improvements but the most notable, apart from young Steven Guymer, perhaps, were the organiser, Paul Hayward, and the unbelievable Brian Haskell who both went better by a minute. Also with improvements to shout about were Jeremy Ireland from Brid and Andy Barnes who were both promoted for their efforts. Don't let us overlook the girl competing among all the men, Vanessa Frith knocked another half minute off her personal with a 24.15.
Steven Guymer now has a three point lead in the overall competition and he may not score so high in division one (he started in division five as a novice). Close on his heels are Andy Barnes and Mike Kilgour but they both have been promoted and may not score so high although they both have potential for improvement and time bonuses. Next is Juliam Gromett, he can't really score more in his division and it's most difficult to get time bonuses at this level, but if anyone can beat 21 minutes on this course he seems to have the best chance. Les Philips has dropped off the top spot because he's moved into a higher division - but that's how it works - but Dave Shackleton had a comfortable win and is likely to do this again in the last event.
As always this Time Trial Series is turning out to be very interesting
