Ten League Event One
Despite
persistent rain during the day the weather cleared as the timekeepers
were setting their watches. Most of the riders had to warm up in the rain
- note the clever idea of Steve Gore-Brown - a real use for a summer brolly.
Many of the riders entered expecting to be able to use the V718 but the course cannot be guaranteed for the series so the V714 used instead. The times were, I guess, approximately one minute to a minute and half slower, but the Ten league series is a competion between leagues. Who expected Julian Gromett to beat Joel Wainman by a quarter of a minute? And with Steve Roe only a second away?
The first event is always a sorting out one with a number of promotions and demotions. The first was Steve Gelder from Two to One in exchange for Gil Foston. John Lockwood from Three to Two in exchange for Brian Haskell. Tristan Batch, a contender last year, from Div Four to Three in exchange for Tom Oldfield. From Division Five there were two promotions, Steve Guymer - flying at 14 years old, and Chris Garden - a complete newcomer, in exchange for Chris Baker and Gary Brearley.
The winner of the random event prize, a science-in-sport introductory pack, was won by Digby Rusling. There will be a similar award each event.
Next event the 5th June.
