Ten League Event Three

The strong wind kept most of the scaredy - cowardy-custardy riders away; there were 21 non-starters tonight. When most riders went backwards in time and lost minutes, Julian Gromett managed to lose only 11 seconds, three 21s in a row seems to have sewn the Premier Division up for him.

Only five riders did faster times, one of these, John Macklam's was the result of a puncture in his previous event and the otherw were only by a few seconds. Not counting Alan Gay's loss of nearly ten minutes, presumably from a puncture, the average loss was some 67 seconds. All the more credit to Julian Gromett's ride. But what about Steven Guymer's ride? He lost only 8 secs and his 24.33 was the fifth fastest of the evening. Not bad for a 14 year old. And I was telling people it was a strong man's event - Steve is built like a beanpole but he pedals good, without doubt the best ride of the night.

Charles Crookes came out on top in Division one, a very closely fought division with two riders only 2 seconds behind him. In Division Two John Lockwood managed to secure a win once more but Jeremy Ireland is creeeping up on him; the 36 sec beating in the last event was reduced to only 3 seconds tonight. Steven Guymer once again gets promoted, from Division Three this time, unfortunately you can only earn promotion points once. Chris Garden manages to maintain a handsome lead in Division Four but not good enough for promotion, perhaps he's happy enough to sit there and keep winning this division. Gary Brearley went back a minute and a quarter but still had a good lead in this division. Les Philips won Division Six this week but for the last time - he gets promoted to Division Five.

The points system may seem a little complicated, some say there's a degree course on at the university to understand them, but they have evolved to give points for consistency with a little bias to those who improve the most. You could say that Steve Guymer should be in the lead after getting promoted every event. But perhaps he was place too low in the Divisions to start with, where do you put a 14 year old with not much in the way of a palmares? Or what about Julian Gromett who cannot pick up any promotion points? Well, the leader is rightfully Les Philips who's won his division 3 times and has now earned some promotion points and has picked up most from improvement points. But now he has to compete with others faster than him, so the points competition is still open to a number of competitors. We'll have to see after the next event.
