Chris
Whitelam Takes another Hull Thursday Gold
Roadworks
stymied the Lockington course for the latest of the Time
Trial Series and Paul did a brilliant job arranging an alternative
right at the last minute. Starting in the layby just north
of Beswick on the Driffield road and finishing near the
farm just south of it made ten miles of reasonably flat
good surfaced roads. Potentially fast.
A
bright and warm enough day it wasn't long before the rainclouds
rolled in and a light rain began for the duration of the
event. Although we were sheltered from the wind in the finish
area the return journey was a real killer, even Chris Whitelam
found it hard - he said.
Andy
Barnes was first back off number 4 with a 24.11 - not a
bad time; the road racing has obviously put some strength
in his legs. A couple of minutes later Mark McKeown came
in with a 24.50 "a personal," he said, "but
then I don't get to ride on fast courses".
Val
did a good 29.01 and Les on his comeback a creditable 29.49.
But Mattie was really after him off two minutes and finished
within sight of his dad with a 28.19. Paul Hayward is more
at home on the flatter terrain and did a 25 but the first
sub-25mph ride came from Steve Macklin, seven seconds inside.
Chris
Whitelam then showed what could be done on this course with
a 22.30 - a good course record even though this is the first
event on it. Mark Carmichael came along with a 24 but Paul
Purdy moved into second place with his 23.11. We waited
to see what Dean would do but he was 18 seconds slower that
Paul for third place relegating Steve out of the medals.
Paul's was the ride that Chris was interested in but there
was no real threat.
Overall
there was a bit of traffic on the course but not too much
of a hazard. The roundabout was a bit exciting if you approach
it at 30 mph. This may make a good evening event course,
we'll have to see what Paul has to say. See
