Chris
Whitelam notches the first win in the Time Trial Series
You
can see from the clothing and the photographs that many
were expecting rain on the first of the solo time trials
in the series. Paul must have said his prayers last night
because the rain stopped, the clouds cleared away and the
sun even shone for just the duration of the event. The wind,
however, stayed strong - for three quarters of the circuit
I heard - and even Chris admitted that it was hard today.
Nevertheless he took a minute all but a second out of second
fastest rider, Paul Purdy also taking part in the series
for the first time.
Dean
Fulstow and Neil Cleminshaw are going to have a real ding
dong this year with Dean managing to claim first blood.
Can Neil get the better of him? Watch this space! Steve
Macklin wasn't far behind and he may have been holding back
a little with a road race to get through on the morrow,
and Chris Burton is improving all the time and I think he
likes this circuit. Derek Palmer seems to get stronger and
stronger and I think Tim was a little below his best. There's
a whole group of people waiting to pounce here with Mark
Carmichael, Paul Kilvington and Chris Garden all within
seconds of each other. And don't forget Nathan Wilson and
Andy Barnes, Nathan gets better every event and Andy is
still learning the ropes, I think.
Mick
Adams doesn't seem to get any slower - a brilliant time
if you took age into consideration - and Graeme Lawton has
to get over his running muscles to fare better. Nathan Chester
was having a day off from pushing himself and Roger Sumner
punctured during the first lap.
Young
Callum McElwee (13 years old) rode his first event ever
and was very nervous. Nevertheless he produced quite a good
time for a novice, especially on such a windy day. Riding
a private trial, Steven Guymer, another schoolboy with a
little more experience, did a very creditable ride and would
have finished just behind Derek Palmer. See
Pics.
