Turn Out for the Two Up This year
This
must be a record turnout for a club team time trial and
there was some fierce competition.
Paul
Purdy co-opted the services of Joel Wainman in his quest
to beat Chris Whitelam. Must be the first of our club events
that Joel's ridden for a long time and he certainly had
Paul hanging on once he got into motion. But that's life
in a two up - there's nearly always a dominant one who does
the lion's share of the work and I heard a number of riders
saying they had to grit their teeth at times - if not to
cry for mercy.
It
was a good night, quite breezy from the south but you didn't
really feel it until you reached the Etton Pasture School.
And who did the best most unexpected time? Now that is a
good question and you could spend hours in the pub speculating.
For a start they
were all good times when you consider the undulations of
the course to be the equivalent of a "25" on a
fast course. Paul and Tim were first back with a 57 that
set the target and Mick Adams and Paul Hayward must have
been pleased with the "1" when they finished a
couple of minutes later. Young Calum did a good "3"
for his first distance event with Dave Percival and then
Derek Palmer and Ryan MacLachlan set a new benchmark of
55:36.
Andy
Peers and Nathan Wilson came in with a creditable "58"
and then Neil and Chris came in with the new time to beat
- 52:20. They just got in before Jeremy Ireland and Mark
Carmichael put their "54" up on the board. Another
sub-hour ride, a "58" from Nathan Chester and
Chris Garden.
A
great ride from Dave Shackleton recovering from Sunday's
classic with Steve Macklin with a "53", just two
minutes before Joel and Paul returned the fastest 51:26.
I
don't know what Mark Summer and Andy Barnes had been doing
to upset the timekeeper - timekeepers don't give you 1:00::01
unless you've really done something nasty to them. But still
more rides to come in- Steve Guymer - remember he's still
a schoolboy - came in with a "58" and brothers
Fulstow off last men recorded a short "54" - not
a bad night's work at all.
Unlucky
perhaps was Mike Kilgour who recorded a "6" virtually
on his own. I see the timekeeper marked John Weaden down
as a puncture but I suspect that might have been in his
legs. In fact John told me that's the first time that he's
ever packed in an event - Now that is a good record when
you consider Jphn's age and how long he's been riding.
Incidentally,
this was a new record tonight beating Neil Cleminshaw and
James Frith's time of 51.35 three years ago.
