Chris
Whitelam takes the second individual event and appears unbeatable
After
road works in Skidby made it necessary to start through
the village last year, Paul Kilvington decided it was much
safer avoiding the village with its twists and parked cars.
By bringing the start back by 200 yards we were able once
more to cover Ten Miles, the original concept of a hilly
Ten.
Another
breezy day with the wind from the west made it almost as
difficult to get moving as it was when the event started
at the bottom of Skidby Hill, there was no doubt who the
favourite was. But you never know. I took some photographs
about a mile up the hill and there was a definite correlation
between the pain shown on the face of the riders and their
ages.
Chris
Whitelam had more than a minute in hand over Dave Shackleton
by the finish. Don't know what speeds Chris was reaching
on the descent from Riplingham crossroads but Tim White
told me he was doing 36 mph down that stretch - unfortunately
he was a bit tired and couldn't maintain to the finish.
Dean Fulstow was breathing down Dave's neck with his finish
time but he was well clear of Steve Macklin (both vets).
A
very good ride next from schoolboy Steve Guymer and also
fom Derek Palmer who also beat 27 minutes. Derek packs a
lot of power in those bulky muscles. See
