Despite 16 riders been
out the previous week, the turn out for the Annual Free-Wheeling
Competition was extremely low. In fact only four met at
Skidby at 09:30 hrs;
Neil Cleminshaw, Barry Trotter, Steve & Richard Guymer.
Then Paul Kilvington joined the group en-route as he had
stayed overnight in Market Weighton.
Apparently City RC had
a club Hill Climb on the same morning (Sunday 17th October
2004) but who would excel at flying down em rather than
grinding up em?
Well even though the
rain was pouring down before Skidby was reached, it did
ease off for the pleasant ride out through Etton, Middleton
and Huggate to the Millington Junction for the Start.
A head-wind was encountered down the valley, which slowed
the competitors progress somewhat. A Highland Cow threatened
to tamper with the result, but fortunately the long-horned
beast was narrowly avoided by all. Thanks to some arm-aching
aero-positioning Neil Cleminshaw managed to clinch a 20
yard march over Paul Kilvington, despite an unorthodox leg
surging/swinging action employed by Steven Guymer which
'propelled' him ahead of Barry and Richard, enabling him
to get on the podium.
Neil would like to dedicate
his victory to Melton-Mowbray, without whom he feels it
would not have been possible!
A slap up nosh at Angela's
Ramblers Rest in Millington was topped off by scaling Nunburnholme
(Steady on now Steve) and a soggy ride home!
