Event Three - Walkington Course - 30 Miles - club Hull & E.R.R.C

 

A Warm summery evening with a stiff breeze from the north west making conditions on the climb from Walkington to Hunsley Cross roads a bit difficult. A lot of riders tonight, 57 in all. With a fast finishing straight - downhill and back wind - it was essential that the scratch group be given a chance tonight and hopefully avoiding 57 riding finishing together. The first group comprised Andy Blanchard, Peta Estens, Kevin Worth, Anthony Weston, Mel Blatchford, Mark Summer, Mark McKeown, Ellis Thackray, Dan Ashman, Rob Saunders, Roger Summer.

Four minutes later the largest group, group two started which were: Andy Barnes, Jim Baker, Daniel Wright, Nathan Wilson, Jeffrey Hardy, Bill Hodgson, Geoff Bryan, Chris Brearley, Anthony Pearson, Steven Waterall, Simon Collins, Mark Perry, Derek Palmer, Tony Washbrook, Alistair Watson, Simon Nicholls, Barry Dixon, David Allen, Kyle Byers, Andy Peers, Jeremy Ireland, Stewart Macfarlane.

A sleeker group three started a minute later with: Ben Roberts, Lee Cairns, Martin Cockerill, Dean Fulstow, Matthew Fenton, Gary Fulstow, Mike Gill, Dave Hudson

Another minute passed by before a more determined group four started: Chris Burton, Paul Purdy, Ryan MacLachlan, Stewart Pickard, David Compston, Mark Bateman, Andy Hayton, Paul Noton, Zak Thackray

Lastly, at another minute, the scratch group started more determined than ever: Alistair Kay, Jason Benham, Stephen Ward, Mike Moss, Phil Bateman, Dave Shackleton, Dan Keena.

After the first lap a group of four had detatched itself from the fom group no doubt organised by the more experienced Mel Blatchford crossed the line in 19:40, 25 seconds before another six riders and losing two of the four minutes allowance to group two.

Group two, the big one, kept their allowance from three and went round the circuit in 17:46. Group three, however, were caught by a very determined group four, completed the circuit in 17:55; meaning this latter group completed in 16:55.

Group five had a job to do, went around in 16:38, fastest of all, still a compact group.

Lap 2 was a prime lap and Mark McKeown managed to beat Mel Blatchford to the line before Jeremy Ireland, Mark Summer, Dan Ashman and then the whole field en masse.

Lap three was another prime and Ali Kaye led a small elite group of seven, crossing the line before Phil Bateman. the rest of the pack were no more than a handful fo seconds behind.

But all were back together for the final sprint - we at the finish were betting on Steve Ward or Ali Kay with a possible Mike Moss as an outsider. Steve Ward did take the finish brilliantly from Ali Kay, but third place was taken by a new junior rider, Mark Bateman.

In the points race overall, Martin Cockerill is leading his Bridlington team mate David Compston, with Matthew Fenton in third place.
