Event Seven - Little Weighton Course - 50 Km

At last some good weather. Because of the presentation after the race we kept the race down to 4 laps and I tried hard to get the handicapping right using the times recorded the first two weeks on this course. So, in the first group setting off at seven o'clock was Mark McKeown, John Brearley (returning after injury to his knee) Terry Sullivan, Ellis Thackray and Andrew Penny.

Four minutes later went group two. These were Nathan Wilson, Scott Hamilton (his annual road race), Derek Palmer, Andy Barnes, Andy Peers, Bill Hodgson, Steven Waterall, Lee Watson, Steven Guymer, Simon Nicholls, Geoff Bryan, Dan Ashman, Daniel Wright, Simon Collins, David Allen and Tony Washbrook.

One and a half minutes later is group three comprising Anthony Pearson, Martin Grantham, Martin Cockerill, Ben Roberts, Mark Perry, Mike Gill and Paul Rooney.

Group Four has grown considerably since the early events and they had a one minute gap. They were Paul Noton, John Hopper, Robert Day, Ryan MacLachlan, Stewart Pickard, Chris Burton, Steve Macklin, David Compston, Zak Thackray, John Galway, Paul Purdy and Rob Saunders. As it turned out - this was collectively the strongest group.

The scratch group starting a minute later was headed by Alistair Kay with a good chance of taking the overall lead. He was backed up by Steven Ward, Dan Keena, Dave Shackleton and Adam Duggleby. Just off the back at the start, missing his own group two by nearly four minutes, was Mel Blackford who either took a lap out or a short cut to get back to his own group. Main contenders then were groups three, four and five with groups one and two picking up early prime points; and there was only two minutes between groups three and five.

First back at the end of lap one were John Brearley and Mark McKeown. John was going quite well after his injury and the pair had lost two of their original four minutes advantage. The group that had made the most effort was group four. They had caught group three and were well on the way, 22 seconds in fact, to catching group two. The scratch group had lost out here and had lost another five seconds this lap. Now who was doing the driving? I'd guess Paul Noton in group four (with plenty of backup) and Ali Kay in the scratch group.

Lap 2 was a prime lap and Mark McKeown had managed to keep his nose ahead - ten seconds over a reduced group two; and half a minute still to the combined three and four. Ali Kay had lost another two seconds and was trailing by 1.07.

Lap 3 and another prime, this time taken by Andy Barnes from Group Two. But everyone except the scratch group were right behind. Things were happening in the scratch group however. Although Ali Kay was doing the lion's share of the work, Dan Keena put in a tremendous effort and brought the gap down to 26 seconds.

Of course everything happens on the last lap and it looked possible for everyone to be together. Unfortunately Dan's efforts had lost Dave Shackleton and Adam Duggleby and reduced the group to three. On top of that, Paul Noton attacked out of a corner just over the top of the hill and was away on his own. Paul's solo effort took another twenty five seconds out of the chasers in the remaining five or six miles and he came in to a well-deserved victory on his own. I saw Ryan lead out the sprint from too far out and John Hopper took that comfortably from Anthony Pearson and Robert Day. But Ryan and Nathan Wilson, both Juniors, were close in there. The three scratchmen came in 40 seconds behind the bunch in the closest sprint of all. Ali Kay from Steve Ward and Dan Keena meant Ali got another two points for first in that group.

It had been a good race tonight and Matthew Fenton held on to his lead in the points competition, Ali Kay needed six to topple him but only managed two. Martin Cockerill and Ryan MacLachlan shared third place and the Bridlington lads gained four places in the top eight.

At the award ceremony at the Black Horse in Little Weighton, Paul Baskerville's mother presented the remembrance trophy to Tony Washbrook on behalf of Matthew Fenton who was on holiday. David Compston received the Veteran's trophy from Shirley Sutton and organiser Malcolm Daddy presented the Junior trophy to Ryan MacLachlan.
