Ten League Event One
A drastic reduction in the number of competitors in the Ten League must reflect ominously on its continuation. Nevertheless there is still some good competition and it would be a waste to see it disappear after what must be forty years, forty years in which the competition itself has been modified to provide a timetrialling system which doesn't just benefit the few. Last year Julian Gromett took the first event but Joel Wainman was having none of that this year. Twenty three seconds was the margin with third placed Tony Stott a further quarter of a minute behind.
Of course all the interest doesn't centre around the premier division, each has its own battles. In division one Jeremy Ireland beat John Brearley but I can see John getting his own back before very long. Jason Benham showed his class in division two, but with a margin to promote him to the division above. An even bigger margin in division three where Ryan MacLachlan took more than two and a quarter minutes out of the next man and, indeed, only five riders in the premier division beat him. Well, Ryan, you can only get promotion points once and you're going to be hard pressed to get bonus points on personal bests.
Dave Percival won division four but young Calum is sitting right on his heels.
Julian Gromett nearly didn't make the start - he punctured a new tub on the way and was fortunate that he was able to replace the wheel in time - just. Unfortunately his dad Brian llocked his keys in the boot of his car together with all Julian's clothes. There was a bit of a wait for him whilst his sister had to find the spare keys at home and come across from Grimsby. It happens to us all.
The evening wasn't good by a long way, there was a cold northerly wind across the riders both ways and Joel must have been pleased with his ride compared to others. I managed to take a few photos before too many riders got in at the finish.
