No need to go into southern Europe for tropical weather, it came to us for the two stage race as we expected, and enjoyed (??), temperatures in the thirties. You don’t often see marshals sheltering from the sun.
Colin Baldwin was the first to try the 7 kilometres climbing to High Hunsley, starting at ten o’clock he managed it just outside his 11 minute target, which is a good par for the course. Steve Macklin was first to better this. Coming in off number 6 he recorded 10:25 and should, we thought, get him in the first ten. The new target was ten and a half minutes and only two minutes later Andy Marshall came back with 10:02. Who was going to get into single minute figures?
John Moore, off no 19, nearly did with 10:01, and then 6 minutes later his team mate Mark Wilkes startled us with a stunning 9:47. Only three minutes later Keith Murray of Wheelspincycles knocked another eight seconds off this to take, and keep, the lead. Simon Baxter did a 9:49 to take third place and Vince Macklam a 9:50 for fourth.
Hull Thursday riders didn’t fare badly either: Michael Chorlton was 10th, Steve Macklin 14th , Karl Downes 17th, Glenn Whitehouse 24th, Mark Walker 44th and Chris Burton 43rd.
Fifty four riders started the road race stage in the midday sun; Paul Purdy smarting somewhat when he was not allowed to continue because the rims on his wheels were too deep(??).
At the end of the first lap, in 18:22, were Lee Cairns, Terry Parker(?) and Graeme Huston with a 35 seconds lead over Levi Huck, Mark Saxton and Ian Bartholomew, six seconds infront of the peloten led by Michael Chorlton. The second lap was a prime lap taken by Jack Rees with Michael Chorlton, Simon Baxter and Ian Bartholomew. Andrew Johnson, John Woodouse and Steve Macklin were pulling the peleton along just half a minute behind.
Lap three saw an interesting group of about eleven riders led by Stephen Duffy and Daniel McClusky developing and this grew to three quarters of a minute by the prime on lap 4. Duffy took the prime but a real chase was going on; Glenn Whitehouse and two others fifteen seconds ahead of the bunch. These had been four very fast laps – 18:20, 17:38, 17:11 and 17:35 – and it was very hot out there.
The group were still together after five laps with Paul Musgrave and Steve Duffy leading and the bunch 43 seconds behind. Although there was a generally slowing down. lap time 18:31, there were quite a few going out of the back and there had been a couple of minor crashes with no-one hurt.
The last of the primes on lap six was taken by Keith Murray from David Woodiwiss and Alan Nixon but this little break was being brought back rapidly. The bunch were now only 11 seconds behind, chasing hard with a few more going out of the back but the lap time was again 18:31.
Three riders detatched themselves from the front on the seventh lap and Paul Bridgen, Kyle Byers and Colin Baldwin had a 46 second lead on the bunch, lapping in 18:15, and this lap saw Mark Ollerenshaw, Ian Bartholomew and Jack Savage disappear out the back.
Expecting a great bunch finish it was a bit of a relief to see Alan Nixon had broke free for a solo win – always the best kind – and Paul Bridgen beat beating Kyle Byers in a two up sprint for second. Even fourth place was a two up sprint, Vince Macklam beating Paul Musgrave just 11 seconds before the remaining bunch, some 23 strong, thundered across the line like an express train.
My apologies for misleading you all with the overall result in the changing rooms; in my haste I added your time bonuses into the overall time instead of subtracting them. My gratitude also to Trevor Blackburn whose pictures allowed us to sort the finish out – and the photos here are Trevor’s.
