Week Five - 4th Feb

The second session at Brantingham took place in fine weather, not quite as many as the week before, but still 24 took part. Nine laps this week and it went extremely well, everyone working and each group lapping consistently. First off for nine laps was group two: Nathan Chester, Dave Hudson, Richard Benbrook, Calum McElwee, Paul Kilvington and David Brearley. Third group, the scratch group, consisted of: Paul Joliffe, Duncan Puttman, Joel Wainman, Nathan Wilson, Paul Noton, Steve Guymer, Karl Downs and Chris Burton. |

The (easy???) group doing eight laps were Mark Robinson, John Galbraith, Mark Walker, Phil Eden, Paul Hayward, Mick Adams, joined by Vince Cartwright, Ian Cartwright and, for a while, Mike Gomersall. Gaps from 2nd to scratch was 3min 30 secs and about the same to the first group. Lap times were:

This was exactly what group training is about - everybody was almost together at the finish but not quite, everyone did a good share of work and I saw that Dave Hudson and Paul Noton, usually two strong men, were completely cleaned out. Particularly good was the way group one kept together, no doubt thanks to Mark there. Should be interesting next week with one more lap. Incidentally, Mark tells me he's got a training bike that he's willing to give to someone who will use it. Why not talk to Mark on Saturday. |

Sorry to tell you that Paul Hayward broke his ankle half way around the session today, a minor incident when riders had to swerve and Paul fell down with his foot in the cleat. This sort of this usually happens when you fall off at a kerb. Really unlucky and we hope he's up and around again soon.

Fewer riders today, only 20, but enough to have a good training session. Initially there were only three riders in the scratch group so, in spite of increasing the laps to ten, we decreased the time gap to 3 minutes. Group 2 set off first and they were: Graeme Lawton, Calum McElwee, Mark Robinson, Mike Kilgour, Nathan Chester, Glenn Whitehouse, Paul Kilvington and Dave Hudson.
Group 3, the scratch group, was Joel Wainman, Richard Moore and Steve Ward, joined after the first lap by Karl Downs.
Group three was Mick Adams, Paul Hayward, Mark Walker, Rob Stones, John Galbraith and M Roberts. Ian and Vince Cartwright joined this group after the first lap but Vince felt he could go with a faster group and finished for a few laps with the scratch group. He went quite strongly with them for a while but a bad gear change saw him out the back. And this after a racing in the track league at Manchester the previous night and getting a first and two thirds. Coming along nicely.
The scratch group were really working hard to catch the middle group and Rob Stones held group one together, Mark Robinson opting to go along with group two. Half way through Paul had his unfortunate accident and Ian Cartwright stopped to help and call the ambulance.

Everyone was together after eight laps but the three strong men, Joel, Steve and Richard were forcing a pace too much and they went off together.

Thanks to the marshals Dennis Hunter, Roy Harvey, John Weaden, Mally Wiles and Glenn's partner Cheryl. And also to Ian Cartwright and Calum's dad for looking after Paul.
