Training Ride 1, 6th January, 2007. Cottingham

Funny to be writing “2007”, I’ll get used to it by July.

From a good forecast we had a good turn-out but there was drizzling rain during the session, good for the riders but not the marshals. Difficult at the start of a new year to see who needs to go in which group, but it all gets sorted in time.

In the first group was John Lockwood, Ashley Smith (after a long layoff), Phil Eden, Mark Walker, Paul Hayward (getting back after his broken ankle which spoiled his whole year in 2006), Simon Mason, Ian Cartwright, Mike Kilgour an Jack Thirsk (a young lad just getting into the ropes of it).

Second group was Dan Ashman, Tony Boynton, Derek Palmer, Andy Carroll, Dave Hudson, John Brearley, David Brearley and Nat Chester. They went off three minutes after the first group.

Another two minutes and the scratch group of Vince Cartwright, Karl Downes, Richard Moore, Joel Wainman, Mattie Barrat and Steve Guymer set off on their scratch group, adding Paul Purdy, Mike Moss and Paul Jolliffe at the end of their chat lap.

Interesting to watch the gaps come down and five riders in the front group, Mark, John, Ashley, Ian and Mike survived with a half minute still in hand. Everybody who could stayed together but the groups were perhaps a bit big and maybe, given the same turn-out, we can have four or even five groups. You don’t get as many turns at the front in a large group and training is about going to the front as often as you can.
