Training Ride 8 Brantingham 24th February.
Weather report was pretty dismal but at least it wasn’t raining, not at the start anyway. We were a bit short on marshals, too and Rob and Dennis did a sterling job, as did Liz at the top corner.
Group two started first (sounds Irish) but with twelve laps to complete we were giving the novice group a lap start. Group two consisted of Mike Kilgour, Dave Hudson, John Brearley, Mark Walker, Sam Dyason and Paul Kilvington.
Three minutes later we started Neil Cleminshaw, Mattie Barrat and Karl Downes training together for the three-up next week, a minute in front of the scratch group. Initially these were Nathan Chester, Mike Chorlton, Steve Macklin and Darren Bendelow. It proved too much for Darren when they were joined by Richard Moore and Chris Daddy so he moved to the middle group.
The slowest group started 30 seconds after, with one lap less to do. They were Phil Eden, Simon Mason, and new lad Mark Bishop.
The first disaster hit this slower group after four laps when Simon crashed his gears in exactly the same place that Paul Hayward did a year ago, on the rise to the Brantingham T junction. Paul broke his ankle which ruined the rest of the year for him. Simon was perhaps a little more fortunate, he only broke his chain, his gear mech and his rear mech hanger and he was able to go round to Dunny’s to get them replaced and he retired before things got too bad.
The weather, unfortunately, deteriorated rapidly, first darkness, then rain and then so heavy the rain that visibility was impaired. Rob Stones really needed gumboots at Ellerker cross-roads, stood in a a pool half a foot deep in his best suit. His request to stop the session after eight laps went unheeded at first by me, I was under the impression that the riders were no more uncomfortable than usual, but when I realised the danger on the old A63, deep pools at the edge of the road and motorists pressing on their accelerators regardless of diminished visibility, So we stopped the session two laps shorter than anticipated. It would take Dennis a week to dry out.
Thanks for all your support, especially the marshals who helped it run smoother, and I hoped you have enjoyed and found the sessions useful. Good luck with all your events in the next few weeks.
