Training. Event Three Cottingham 20th January 21-01-2007
Even more wind today and colder too.
Seven riders in the first group: Ashley Smith, Andy Carroll, Mick Adams, David Brearley, Simon Mason, Phil Eden and Paul Hayward.
In group two we had Tony Boynton, John Lockwood, Dave Hudson, Mike Kilgour, Mark Walker, John Brearley and David Galbraith. This seven gave a three minute lead to the first group.
After persuading and cajoling Karl Downs, Michael Chorlton and Nathan Chester to join Joel Wainman and Richard Moore, they set off with another minute and half handicap. I was sure they’d get together this week. Not too soon I hoped.
Lap two saw three more riders join group three, Mike Moss, Paul Jolliffe and Ryan MacLachlan, and they made catching the other groups a real certainty.
After four laps groups two and three came together but the elusive first group were in sighjt. On lap five they were caught and Moz decided to keep the group small and put in some hard turns. Group one were mostly unaffected by this but the rest were hanging on. Nevertheless a good working group emerged and the speed increased all the way to the finish.
Joel is giving me some good feedback and especially useful is the lap speed of the scratch group. Comparing the times is not quite the same as lap one is shorter and the last lap is the shortest of all. A little discrepancy between time and speed is because I time them at a different point to Joel, so his are quite accurate and reflect the way things really went.
Next week is another session at Cottingham and, because of roadworks on the Brantingham course, I’m having to switch the venues a little. So week 5 and six will be at Sproatley, east of the city, and hopefully we can finish the last two on Brantingham. Tell everybody please.
