Training Week 2 Cottingham circuit. 13th Jan
Another good turnout, a bit drier and clearer than last week but much windier, fortunately not as windy as the gales we had during the week. With the wind from the west it was going to be much more difficult and I did tell you to make sure you had good protection, echeloning closely knit.
In group one was Paul Hayward. Phil Eden, Simon Mason and Jack Thirsk.
Group two, starting two minutes later, was Ashley Smith (welcome back into the club Ashley), John Lockwood, David Galbraith, Mike Kilgour, Andy Carroll, Dan Ashman, Mark Walker, John Askew and Ian Cartwright.
Another two and a half minutes for Dave Hudson, Michael Chorlton, John Brearley, David Brearley, Nathan Chester and Derek Palmer.
Finally the scratch group at another 2½ minutes, basically the same as last week from group two, was Ryan MacLachlan, Paul Joliffe, Steve Guymer, Karl Downs, Matt Barratt, Joel Wainman, and Vince Cartwright.
You can see from the following lap times that the only group to obey the ‘chat on the first lap’ rule was the scratch group, they sacrificed nearly a minute to this. Never mind, the groups worked well together and stayed apart; there was still over half a minute gap to the scratch group after seven laps.
After five laps the scratch group reckoned to be trailing quite a bit and Joel hotted the pace up, it blew everyone except Ryan and Steve away. Vince was an early victim of too much effort to begin with, must keep control and a little bit in reserve to get on the back when you come off the front. There was a lot to be learned from this cross wind, so think back to where you went wrong, and listen carefully to any advice from others in the bunch.
It was a very much harder session because of the wind. Joel kindly recorded the average speed of the scratch group for me and the first week averaged 23.5 mph and week 2, 22.8 mph. Some of this reduced average was due to the slower first lap that the scratch group enjoyed.
Next week I’m planning to add an extra lap just to make it about an hour’s worth of work. There’ll also be an extra week (no extra laps) on the Cottingham circuit because there are road works on the circuit that I use in Brantingham. I am looking out some circuits that side of the city so watch this space.
