Training Event 7 Brantingham 17th February 2007
At last we got on to the Brantingham circuit, a bit shorter than the other circuits but just as testing. Because of the short circuit we had an unusual starting order, made more unusual by the two sets wanting to ride as practice for team time trialling. Group one to do nine laps and everyone else to do ten, so we had group number two starting at 2 ‘clock.
This was a small group of four riders; not a bad thing small groups as everyone has to share the work. These were Dave Hudson, Mark Walker, Glenn Whitehouse and Simon Mason.
The next group was a team practising time trialling, the quartet of Paul Kilvington, Nathan Chester, John Lockwood and Mike Kilgour, and I set them off just a minute after the middle group.
The next group was another TT team, the trio of Neil Cleminshaw, Karl Downes and Mattie Barratt, faster on paper but there, I suspect, to find out whether Mattie could last the distance. As it turned out he was the strong one on the tough rise into the wind up to Brantingham from Stockbridge. They started a minute behind the Kilvo group.
The scratch group turned out the biggest set another two minutes back; not enough I’m afraid. They were Michael Chorlton, Paul Joliffe, Richard Moore, Dave Shackleton, Steve Guymer, Steve Macklin, Steve Ward, Vince Cartwright and Dean Fulstow. Dean and just pushed himself for a couple of hours before the session and said he wanted a kicking. He got it.
Fifteen seconds after the scratch group had disappeared up the road the three doing just nine laps set off, They were Ian Cartwright, Sam Dyason and Phil Eden.
As expected Team Clem forged ahead working very smoothly and everyone else was together in two or three laps. This unfortunately broke up Team Kilvo but they managed to salvage something after the main onslaught passed over. I didn’t, however, expect them to stay out in front, that is until I noticed that after six laps the scratch group had only made half a minute into the two minutes handicap that they started with. It wasn’t until the last two laps that the big group that had accumulated started to break up.
Thanks to Richard Guymer, Les Barrat, Liz Kilgour and Sheila for marshalling, next week is the last one, and we could do with some more help. Hope someone out there is interested – it’s better than watching the tele.
