Jim's Training Event 8
Training Session 8 Report. Sproatley, 23rd February, 2008
With a fair wind gusting from the south west and having experienced it myself in the morning I thought that nine laps of the Sproatley circuit would be enough. “No!”, said Richard, “they’ve worked up to this, they’re doing ten.” And so they did.
Numbers were a little down on the usual this afternoon, not much more than a dozen, but we were able to have three groups and, I must say, they all worked well within each other.
In group one were just two starters, Les Phillips and Stuart Wadsworth.
Three minutes later group two comprised Dave Millson, Mark Walker, Phil Eden, Paul Campbell, Rob Busby and newcomer Jason Young. David Hunt was a latecomer and joined in soon after the start.
Group three started after another three minutes and were Pete Fielding- Smith, Ryan MacLachlan, Dave Hudson, Steve Macklin, Mark Ollerenshaw and Nathan Wilson.

Group one quite rightly stayed together after they were caught and gradually picked up the stragglers from group two finishing with half a dozen or so. The strong ones in group two, Phil Eden, Mark Walker and David Hunt kept together for the first seven laps and were then caught by the scratch group when Mark proved the stronger. Apart from Nathan Wilson who seemed to be out on a limb most of the time, the scratch group worked well together and enjoyed a final sprint between them – no names as this isn’t a race, but you might pick it out from the pictures. If you want an idea of the speed, the riders in the scratch group completed the 27 miles in 1.9. 04 – and they took an easy first lap getting adjusted to the wind.
Well, that’s it for another year, I thought there would be more Thursday riders participating but the ones that did were appreciative of our efforts to provide some enjoyable Saturday afternoons training; the first year that I can remember when we had no rain at all on any of them.
----------------------------------------------------------------
I would just like to say on behalf of myself and all the riders who have
participated in Jim's superbly organised training sessions a big thank you
to all the marshals who have given up their last eight Saturday afternoons
to make the sessions possible. I would personally like to thank Jim
Sampson, Sheila Sampson, Richard Guymer, Don, Barry Trotter (Apologies if I
have missed anyone out) for being out every week regardless of the weather
conditions!
The sessions have been superbly organised, and I know all the riders will
agree it has given them good structured training and has helped their
progression for the 2008 racing season.
Many Thanks again to everyone who has made the sessions possible, See you on
the road!
