HULL THURSDAY ROAD CLUB CENTENARY ROAD RACE
The HTRC Centenary Road Race on 18th May 2008 on the Newbald Circuit was won by Nathan Wilson of Cottingham Coureurs.
Surprisingly, the race culminated in a bunch sprint after six climbs of Burgate from North Newbald village. However, this did not mean that racing was negative. Several attacking riders formed breakaway groups throughout the race but it all came back together by the final lap for a sprint finish.
Nathan Wilson had the legs to convincingly win the sprint after a little over two hours of racing on a hard circuit. He is clearly on form at the moment having previously won the Wetwang Spring Road Race last month on a similar course.
Four Hull Thursday riders put in creditable performances; Steve Macklin came 15th, Peter Fielding Smith came 18th and Mark Ollerenshaw came 31st. John Askew rode well early in the race but pulled out before the finish.
The event was well supported with sixty riders starting including eight of the fifteen reserves on the start sheet. The race was so oversubscribed that in theory there could have been 120 riders if this could have been authorised.
Many thanks to all the members and friends of the club who helped with the race. In particular, many thanks to Les Barratt who marked out the course, organised drivers and arranged marshals with Mike Pickering. It is important to remember that it is not possible for the club to promote these events without the support of its members.
Thanks also to Keith Carter Plastering Limited and nt3.co.uk (formerly Allied Surveyors) for sponsoring the race and making a generous prize list possible to celebrate the Club’s Centenary.
The club made a small profit from the race and was able to make modest donations to the Dave Rayner Fund and Cancer Research UK from the proceeds.
