Jim's Training
Training Ride Two
Saturday, 10th January 2009
Cottingham Circuit
Another good turnout despite the bitterly cold day, minus two degrees on Richard's temperature gauge, fortunately there was no ice on the roads. Training is about working and the bigger the group the less workload on each rider and, as a consequence, I'm trying to keep the groups small, six is ideal, and also to keep the gaps sufficient to delay the convergence of groups; quite difficult if you have large numbers and small circuits. At the same time you could say that going around corners fast in a large group is valuable experience as long as you're all sensible about it. One or two need a little practice, first by yourself and then with a partner who you know is good at it and shows you the best safe line to negotiate. A valuable technique to pick up early.
Group one comprised Paul Campbell, Alan Whittaker, Paul Hayward, Amanda Dean, Jodie Brumhead, Les Phillips and Rob Stones.
In group two there were only four riders; Phil Eden, Neil Dean, Simon Mason and Theo Brumhead.
The ten in group three were Mark McKeown, Andy Tummons, Steve Macklin, Rob Busby, Mark Philipson, Mark Walker, Jason Young, Dave Hudson, John Brearley and Jack Cutsworth.
Last, but not least, were the scratch ten riders, John Ketley, Matthew Enticknap, Steve Guymer, Mark Ollerenshaw, Paul Hickman, Nathan Wilson, David Brearley, Peter Fielding-Smith, Karl Downes and Lee Watson.
Gaps were 2¾ minutes , then 2 minutes and 2 minutes, laps were a bit slower than last week, presumably because of the cold and it was dryer then. But very consistent.

Pleased to note that all the groups now seem to conform to the principle that the first circuit is a chat lap. Also noteworthy is the consistency of the lap times. Let's hope it will be a bit warmer next week, especially for the marshal/helpers Terry, Barry, Dennis and Don.
You may have noticed someone taking pictures around the course (besides me). He's Philip Haskins who's doing a photography course at the Hull College and wanted to get some pictures of you in action. He's reduced a few pictures for me, and they're worth looking at, a good panned shot making Jodie look to be going very fast. There's Jason Young, Andy Tummons, Jodie Brumhead and Simon Mason. And another set of Phil Eden, Mark McKeown, David Brearley, Neil Dean, Rob Busby, Simon Mason(2), and Jack Cutsforth.
